The Torrance Teachers Association begins its sixty fourth year of service to members this school year (2011-2012). Formed as the Torrance Education Association (TEA) during the first year of operation of the Torrance Unified School District (1947-48), the organization was officially chartered by the California Teachers Association in May 1948 and then affiliated with the National Education Association in February 1949. TTA is among the oldest local chapters in the State of California, has close to 1,000 members and is administered by an annually elected Board of Directors.

The primary function
of the Association is to
provide a means for collective action because as a group we are more
powerful and can accomplish more than as individuals. TTA members,
leaders, and staff are involved with member and community educaiton,
representation, communication, political action, negotiations, contract
enforcement, legal assistance, economic services, individual couseling
and public relations
